My first impression of The Compulsion Jazz Quintet ignites a series of memories. Memories of Driving Down California's Hwy., #1 with the top down on a warm night gazing up at the moon and stars… I'm also reminded of a music series hosted by the great Nancy Wilson called cool nights hot jazz. She featured much music with this similar feeling. I enjoyed this constant feeling throughout the pieces. This feeling of simmering which at any point will boil over. Hot music, cool approach!

This is a great CD. Beautiful compositions, great recording and some very unusual sounds. The combination of trumpet and violin is most unusual for a jazz quintet setting. Having two masters like Taubitz and Ulrich makes it possible: the sounds merge beautifully and result into something new and compelling. Adams jazz violin playing is fantastic! He draws from a lot of sources. Like Paganini, Adam combines ideas derived from the possibilities of the guitar with the sound of the violin. His influences from Eddie van Halen to Mike Stern are beautifully transposed on to the violin. He can adapt the sound of his instrument easily to whatever musical situation: sometimes he sounds like a saxophone, sometimes like a violin, sometimes like a guitar. His harmonic understanding of modern jazz harmony is outstanding. The rhythm section plays great. Marcs trumpet is beautifully in tune and very colorful and technically versatile. This is a beautiful jazz recording! Bravo!
